I spearheaded the ‘Alexa personalization’ project, which aimed to redefine the personalization primitives for Alexa, encompassing profiles, recognition, and preferences. The project’s objective was to enhance the profile experience within the app and across multiple modalities, enabling customers to conveniently manage all their personal settings, such as recognition IDs, preferred calendars, and interests, in a single location.
This initiative resulted in a significant improvement of the personalization experience, increasing it by 11%.
Project Highlights
Cross-org alignment
I collaborated with multiple teams to align on the personalization experience, as it impacts various aspects such as music, news, calendar, entertainment, and Alexa’s voice.
Effort optimization
Since the business was large, I noticed that multiple teams were working on the same feature. To unify their vision, I organized workshops, which helped the product and engineering teams reduce development costs.
Exceeded business goals
The launch surpassed the goal of providing personalized experiences to customers. Additionally, it facilitated greater sharing of preferences with Alexa.
Customer problem
Alexa profiles have very limited personalization features, such as name, pronunciation, and voice ID.
Only 32% of respondents in a survey believed that Alexa truly personalizes to their preferences and needs.
Personalized features are buried within settings, making them difficult for customers to discover.
Design Process & Strategy
Brainstorm features
User research insights - I gathered customer feedback and insights from various sources, including usability testing, surveys, and user inputs on personalization features, to focus on the right customer problems.
Design workshop - As a first step, I facilitated stakeholder workshops to identify key improvements that we can plan to enhance the personalization experience for Alexa, which in turn will address the identified customer problems. The stakeholders included product managers, software development managers, designers, and engineers.
Identify features - As an outcome of this workshop, the team aligned on three major areas of improvement:
Prominent ingress to the profile page in the Alexa app
Build preference learning patterns in both App and Multimodal devices.
Consolidate all personal settings into the profile page, including personal calendar, music provider, Alexa’s voice, and more.
Organization alignment - I also conducted workshops with internal teams working on similar personalization features (e.g., preference gathering). These workshops helped align teams and reduce duplication of efforts across the organization.
Define north star
Customer promise - Based on the ideation, I began creating a north star vision for the new profile experience. We defined the customer promise as: “My profile reflects all the things that Alexa knows about me. In my profile, I can manage my personal information, such as my mobile number, how Alexa recognizes me, as well as personal preferences like music, artists, news, and Alexa’s voice.” The north star experience is designed to fulfill this customer promise.
High fidelity designs - I created high-fidelity designs to showcase the North Star vision for the new profile page. I also developed a fully functional prototype and motion design to demonstrate the end-to-end experience of the enhanced profile.
Executive leadership alignment - This vision was shared with the Directors and VP in the Alexa organization to ensure alignment. We also captured and addressed the strategic feedback provided by the leadership.
Feature Roadmap
Define implementation roadmap - I also closely collaborated with the product managers to break down the north star vision into a roadmap. The roadmap was designed so that customers could receive value as soon as the MLP (Minimum Lovable Product) was released. Based on the roadmap, the team can implement and deliver features incrementally in upcoming quarters. This approach will also help us gather customer feedback for iteration.
Solution Overview
Enhanced profile page with new features and information architecture
I redesigned the profile page with a new information architecture that consolidates all personalization attributes, including profile information, interests, Alexa’s voice, account linking, and personal settings.
Customers can add new interests or confirm the interests that Alexa has inferred based on their interactions.
Account linking allows access to personal content from news, calendar, and music.
Alexa’s voice and speaking speed can also be customized from the new profile page.
Your interests
The new Interests section allows customers to manage their preferences across various categories such as music, sports, movies, food, and more.
Alexa also suggests interests based on inferences. Customers can go to their profile page and confirm these inferences, allowing Alexa to remember them and deliver a personalized experience across categories.
Add new interest
Customers can add interests across multiple categories by browsing suggestions or searching for specific interests.
Each interest can be confirmed by simply tapping the confirm or dismiss icon.
Confirmed interests will progressively enable the ‘Follow’ action. Alexa sends proactive notifications for the interests that have been confirmed.
Customize Alexa’s voice
Alexa’s voice can be customized for each profile in the household, including kids. Household members can choose between a male or female voice, as well as a specific accent they prefer.
Not all customers prefer the same speaking rate, so the speaking rate can be customized based on their needs.
Multimodal Experience
Personalization features can also be managed through the multimodal interface.
I created a design system for the profiles page, which includes cards to browse, navigate, and add new interests.
Ambient cards
I redesigned the ambient home cards to recommend personalized features such as interests, music providers, news providers, and more.
I built a consistent visual language for the cards to ensure that personalization recommendations are uniform across the ecosystem.
Launch & Impact
Business & User Metrics
Exceeded goal – We completed the leadership goal by launching the new profile in the mobile app and multimodal platforms. This enhanced profile experience increased the percentage of daily individual profiles receiving a personalized experience from 20% to 40%. We exceeded the goal, achieving 52.4% of daily individual profiles receiving personalized CX.
Explicit confirmation – We completed the director’s goal to deliver an enhanced profile experience with “Your Interests” in the Alexa mobile app and multi-modal devices. Approximately 67 million interests have been explicitly confirmed by customers.
